Author’s Note on “Ontario”: The word Ontario is of Iroquois origin, and signifies Beautiful Lake. The lake was called Ontario as early as 1646 when the French missionary, Father Issac Jogues, used the term in addressing a large gathering of Indians in the Iroquois town of Osserion, now known as Albany.
The old Iroquois name for the lake has now been extended to denote a vast Province, in area more than four times the size of Great Britain and nearly twice as large as France.
