The town of Kinmount reaches back into the late 1850s when the first settlers made their way up the Bobcaygeon Road into the area of the future settlement. The first settlers built a shanty to provide shelter and began clearing the the land. In time, lumbering became significant in the area. The community grew with new settlers arriving, in particular, one group to arrive were the Icelanders who came in 1874.
