The need for hospitals to provide medical care of the sick and elderly, was addressed in the early years of community development. The first Nicholls Hospital was opened in Moira Hall and operated from 1885 until 1890 in Peterborough.
When Charlotte Nicholls, nee Jackson, died in 1890, she left a sum of money to Peterborough to be used in support of developing and promoting the growth of the town and the many aspects of its social structure.
