The village of Bobcaygeon took on its present day name around 1834. Mossom Boyd, became a known early settler of the area and the founder of the Boyd Lumber Company. The early pioneer settlers included such family names as Dunsford, Langton, Junkin, Hunter and Steele. The story of this community is told through short family biographical accounts of some of the pioneer families.

The history of the community is revealed through the family members who took part in promoting the growth of farming, lumbering, saw mills, cheese factories and dairies along with boat building. As part of the Trent Severn waterway, the locks at Bobcaygeon and its connection back down to Peterborough through the rivers and canal system, also became an important part of the development of this area of the province of Ontario.
